In America alone, the catering industry is said to be a business generating over $6 billion worth of trading, as well as being expected to continue growing. Food Preparation Workers – are the members of staff that prepare the ingredients in order for chefs and cooks to use.  Common tasks for food preparation workers including slicing fruits and vegetables, as well as cutting meat and fish products.  Food Preparation staff also tend to do a lot of weighing and measuring as part of their preparation and cleaning afterwards.

In the kitchen, a chef or cooks prepares the meal by following specific recipes.  The roles do differ with a chef having the control over the kitchen, ensuring that everything runs smoothly and to schedule.  A chef will often have a relationship with the restaurant owner and discuss potential items for the menu, as well as being responsible for the number of ingredients, supplies and sometimes staff.

Wait-staff serve food and attend to the customers needs, such as bringing an extra round of drinks or even moving them to another table.
